Class Descriptions

Fire Instructor II

Provides the Fire Instructor I with the next level of understanding for the training of personnel. This course is designed to train the participants to perform job and task analysis, develop goals and objectives, and develop a lesson plan along with the coordinating training aids and student test and evaluation. During the course the students are divided into groups, each of which is responsible for the development of a lesson plan to be presented to the class on the final day.

Prerequisite: Certified Fire Instructor I

Haz Mat Awareness and Operational Levels

A certification course by the Pro Board.

Meets the requirements of the stated levels of NFPA 472, Standard on Professional Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials Incidents, 2002 edition.

The Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operational Levels course is designed for those emergency response personnel (fire, police, EMS, and others) who may be first on the scene of a hazardous materials emergency.

First responders at the awareness level are expected to recognize the presence of hazardous materials, protect themselves, secure the area, and call for trained personnel.

At the operational level, the first responder uses the knowledge gained from the awareness level to act in a defensive posture to protect people, the environment, or property from the effects of an unplanned hazardous materials release.

The entire course will be taught in the classroom and field environment. This course meets the requirements of the mandatory Awareness/Operational training in hazardous materials required by Title III - Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986 and NFPA 472, Standard on Professional Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials Incidents, 2002 edition

Note: This is a very physically demanding course which requires you to be in good physical condition.

Special equipment required: NFPA compliant SCBA and turnout gear, PASS device

Reference Text Required: IFSTA’s Hazardous Materials First Responders, 3rd edition, and the DOT Emergency Response Guidebook, current edition, available from the Shelton State Bookstore at 1-800-538-0762.

NOTE: Due to the rigors of the certification exam, students are strongly encouraged to purchase and begin reading the assigned text(s) before classes commence.

Volunteer Fire Fighter (Block Courses)

A certification course by the Pro Board.

The Volunteer Fire Fighter Certification course is designed to prepare the student to perform most fireground functions under the supervision of an officer or experienced fire fighter. This highly structured course is taught through both classroom lectures and hand-on training. 

This course is broken down into four individual blocks that must be completed at an approved location, within a 24-month period. Specific topics include:

Block 1
Orientation and Safety, Fire Department Communications, Fire Behavior, Building Construction, Personal Protective Equipment, Portable Extinguishers, Ropes and Knots, Rescue and Extrication, Forcible Entry 

Block 2
Ladders, Ventilation, Water Supply, Fire Hose, Fire Streams, Sprinkler & Alarm Systems, Loss Control 

Block 3
Medical First Responder 

Block 4
Fire Control, Hazardous Materials A&O, Fire Prevention and Public Education, Review and Critique, Certification Examination 

This course is recommended for all volunteer fire fighters.

 Hazardous Materials Technician

This class is designed for people in the fire fighter, haz mat teams, and law enforcement fields. This course is based on Hazardou Materials Technician training requirements of OHSA 29 CFT 1910.120(q) and NFPA 472 with added elements from NFPA 472. This class is put on by UAB Center for Labor Education and Research

This class is free to the public sector emergency responders who may be involved in hazmat response with Alabama. The class will be held at:
